It’s Sunday night…it’s been a warm, sunny weekend and tomorrow it’s time to head back to work – so here’s a random question to ponder:

What is Success…and how do you get IT?

A couple of thought-provoking statements this week by two famous people got me thinking about how to get Success…

“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”  ~Bill Cosby~

“If today were the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do today?”  ~ Steve Jobs~

Hmmm…what do they mean?  Is it having the dream job, more money, a fancy house, a better body, a nicer car, being loved or something else?

Sure,  all of those things are nice…but…

The job, the house, or the car may be what you want – but they are merely the symbols of having reached success – not the KEY to actually achieving them.

There is ONE MAIN KEY to achieving success – in my humble opinion.  And while Bill’s quote is spot on that you need to have more desire than fear to be successful, it takes more than just desire…

It takes ATTITUDE. 

One little thing that makes a big difference.  Probably the single most favorite picture in my office is this one:

It symbolizes to me that ATTITUDE can turn a small, possibly frightened kitten into a proud lion – and it can do that for you and me too.

The attitude that:

• “I can do this”
• “I am worthy”
• “I am honest and faithful”
• “I will take action“
• “I will not be afraid”
• “I will keep trying and not give up”
• “If I fall down seven times, I will get up eight”
• “If needed, I can and will learn new skills”
• “I will be the best version of me I can be – everyday”
• “I will make a positive difference in the lives of others”

Here’s a fun little quiz:  Sit back, relax and think of something that is important to you.  Now…thinking of that important thing, take a few extra seconds and go back and read those bullet points again…even say them out loud.

How did that make you feel?

Did you feel a little bit of a lion’s “roar” inside your heart and the desire to go do something about it? I know, it sure works that way for me!

Now don’t get me wrong.  Attitude is not the only thing you need to have to be successful. Desire, knowledge, integrity and support also key factors, BUT, I believe that having the right attitude is what drives your integrity, desire and impels you to actually take the steps needed to be successful.

Let’s face it, how do people with a bad attitude act?  Does it look like the list above, or not?

Exactly.  That’s how important having a positive, “can-do” attitude can be.

So…what does ATTITUDE have to do with you having stronger money savvy skills and greater fulfillment in your life?

 Actually, quite a lot.  Your attitude has a dramatic impact – it’s the very cornerstone of how you take charge of your thoughts around your money strategy and destiny – or the lack thereof.  I will tweak Bill’s quote a bit – your desire for success has to be greater than your fear of failure…so what does that mean?

Simply put – you have to want to make changes to your spending habits, your savings habits, your skill set or your living situation – each requires getting over fear, making a strategic plan and taking action.

It also means trying, falling down, getting up and doing it again – and NOT giving up.

Show up and do it to win.

Yes, change takes time, causes you to get out of your comfort zone and may be a bit scary….but what’s the alternative?  More of what you’ve got right now.  Is that what you want?

Here’s the simple truth…

I believe you are the master of  your destiny – mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially.  Thinking about what Steve Jobs said, “If today were the last day of your life would you want to do what you are about to do today?”

There is no right or wrong answer – it only matters to you and those you love.  So…if your honest answer is “No”, what would you want to change?
